Space Traveler Reveals Emotional Distress In the Wake of Deluge of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also carried well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.
She described the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her studies and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was buried under the tide of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following achieving her goal, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she said.
She added that despite the negativity, considerable good had come out of the experience, including elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The self-operating spacecraft departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the edge of outer space.
The team of pioneers also included experts in multiple disciplines.
The company behind the mission is a private space firm launched by a well-known tech mogul.
